Because each dynamic indentation was produced by a slightly different load, dynamic hardness values were not averaged and represented one hardness value at a given indentation load. 9"12 Figure 2 presents the trends in hardness as a function of indentation load for strengthened and virgin glass surfaces. In all cases the hardness curves showed a decrease in Vickers hardness with increasing load. However, once a certain indentation load was reached, the hardness began to level off. The strengthened glass surfaces showed a 22% increase in static hardness and a 12% increase in dynamic hardness compared to the virgin glass surfaces.

Microscopy All static and dynamic Vickers indentations were evaluated with an Olympus BX51 optical microscope, under bright-field and differential interference contrast. On average, at least 10 static indents were measured at each load to determine a representative hardness value. Because each dynamic indentation was produced by a slightly different load, dynamic hardness values were not averaged and represented one hardness value at a given indentation load.
