2 Art as Aesthetic Creation In this chapter, I shall expound the theory of art that I call the ‘Aesthetic Creation Theory’. It is a version of the aesthetic theory of art. I shall give an explicit statement of the theory and deal with minor queries. In sections 2 and 3 of this chapter, I focus on the main elements of the theory. In section 4, I add a number of supplementary remarks and caveats, which serve to clarify minor points and remove minor objections. And in section 5, I defend the theory against the charge that it ignores the social context in which works of art are produced.

That is something I do in Chapters 6 and 7. My purposes in this chapter are constructive and defensive. 1 The Aesthetic Creation Theory A bare statement of the Aesthetic Creation Theory is this: Something is a work of art because and only because someone had an insight that certain aesthetic properties would depend on certain nonaesthetic properties; and because of this, the thing was intentionally endowed with some of those aesthetic properties in virtue of the nonaesthetic properties, as envisaged in the insight.
